Chicago’s “Jamaican Star”
Local designer launches clothing line to help children in her homeland

(5 October 2009) CHICAGO-- When it comes to fashion, Chicagoan Casey-Ann Reid refuses to think small. Reid recently launched “Jamaican Star,” a line of Jamaica-inspired t-shirts, jackets, and caps, that are not only fashionable, they serve a greater good: helping others.

Reid, 26, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to the United States when she was 10. A recent visit home inspired her to dedicate her work to improving life in her homeland.

“I moved to Chicago at the age of 10,” said Reid. “My parents relocated to the U.S. to make a better life for my brothers and myself. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to experience life here, and with all of life’s lessons it was just time for me to start my mission.”

“A recent visit back home to Jamaica made me realize that I needed to do what I can to make a positive difference,” said Reid. “The Jamaican culture has become such a big part of the world today through our music and dance, and yet many still live in poverty and struggle every day.”

“Jamaican Star is my creative way of giving back. We have a wide range of designs. I create what I feel at the moment. I use bright colors, so that my supporters feel like the stars that they are when they wear my tees, and I apply crystals to some designs by hand, so that they can get their shine on.”

Jamaican Star clothing for men and women is unique and eye-catching, with innovative designs that run the gamut, from classic Jamaican Star wording in red, green and gold, Jamaican track star-inspired design, and a dazzling Musical Genius design, to flirty hearts, and slick JStar artwork.

Jamaican Star was established in 2008. Its goal is to create fashion that gives customers a sense of pride while contributing to positive changes on the island.

A full 15% of the company’s profits are donated towards U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightment), a charity created by Ziggy Marley to help Jamaicans in need.

And it hasn’t gone unnoticed. With ringing endorsements from dancehall superstar Sean Paul and upcoming stars Okeefe “Laden” Aarons and “Chino” McGregor, Jamaican Star is quickly picking up speed.

“Her stuff is off the chain!” said McGregor.

And she’s just getting started. Reid plans to expand the Jamaican Star line, and eventually launch a Jamaican Star charitable organization, to provide necessities to those who need it most.

“I really believe in what I am doing and I will never stop,” said Reid. “I really hope to affect people lives in a positive way. I hope building this brand will inspire others to use their gifts to do something great.”

“It can be done,” said Reid. “I see Jamaican Stars of every ethnicity all over the world. By wearing our clothes, you represent change. You have the power to be a part of something great. We are all Stars inside. We should all have the opportunity to shine. No matter where you are from in the world, you too can become a JAMAICAN STAR.”
